An Armenian Football Federation delegation visited Tbilisi to discuss organisational matters related to hosting the 2029 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The first introductory meeting between representatives of the Georgian Football Federation (GFF) and the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA) was held at the Paragraph Hotel. Participants discussed matters related to the joint hosting of the tournament, as well as preparations and organisational arrangements to be undertaken in the lead-up to the event. Working meetings between the Georgian and Armenian football federations will continue as part of the tournament preparations.
On 28 April 2026, at a FIFA Council meeting held in Vancouver, Georgia and Armenia were awarded the right to co-host the 2029 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Georgia and Armenia submitted their joint bid to host the tournament in June 2024.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup has been held biannually since 1977, with 24 teams participating in the final tournament. Georgia will host a world-level FIFA tournament for the first time since independence.
“The FIFA U-20 World Cup is a massive event for a country of our size. It is very important for our region as a whole. Today we held the first working meeting with our Armenian colleagues. We discussed the next steps, and the composition of the local organising committee. We have planned the next meetings, including the next visit [of the Armenian delegation] to Georgia to familiarise themselves with our infrastructure, as Armenia still needs to develop its own infrastructure. We also discussed our own plans to visit Yerevan, and our next steps and activities in general”, – Irakli Nakaidze (Head of Sports Events, GFF).
